Kijiweni Productions: Bringing Films to the People in Tanzania

Kijiweni Productions, based in Tanzania, has become a trailblazer in East African cinema, producing thought-provoking films that spotlight local stories and voices. The company, founded by filmmaker Amil Shivji, is dedicated to exploring socially relevant narratives in Tanzania, capturing the richness of their culture, heritage, and societal issues. With a mission to deliver Films directly to communities across Tanzania, Kijiweni Productions started their travelling cinema using an inflatable movie screen.

With a lack of traditional movie theaters in rural Tanzania Kijiweni needed to think about how they can give audiences access to cinema experience. The solution was using a large AIRSCREEN that brings the mobility needed to host pop-up film screenings in diverse locations. People are gathering in front of the screen to share these moments under the open sky and turn the screenings into memorable cultural events.

Showcasing “The Empty Grave” at Matunda Campsite

Their latest film, The Empty Grave, embodies Kijiweni Productions’ dedication to telling culturally resonant and socially meaningful stories. As part of the travelling cinema experience, The Empty Grave was recently showcased at the scenic Matunda Campsite, where an outdoor screening allowed viewers to connect with the film in a natural, immersive setting.
